Hiring a car in Turkey

Hiring a car in Turkey will lead you through historic cities with ancient ruins, traditional villages and stunning coastal resorts like Bodrum and Marmaris. It's easy to explore the country by car with a mix of speedy highways as well as bumpy dirt paths. Some countryside roads can lead to dead ends so use a map or GPS system to make sure you're on the right track.

Roads are clearly signposted which helps make navigation easy. Some of the newer roads operate on a toll system so check if you'll be passing any of these. Find out if your car hire company uses an automatic payment system to make toll payment fuss-free. Turkey's major airports make a good starting point for your road trip, including Istanbul Ataturk Airport, Dalaman Airport and Antalya Airport.

Places to visit around Turkey

If you're starting your trip in Istanbul, head to the hammam to relax into holiday mode with some pampering at the Turkish baths. Or visit the largest covered market in the world, the Grand Bazaar, to test your bartering skills in this Aladdin's cave of colours and aromas. From here, set off to the south and make your way to the stunning coastline.

Explore the impressive ruins at the ancient city of Ephesus. Then bring yourself back into the modern world at nearby Izmir, which has beaches, shopping and nightlife to keep you entertained. Keep going along the coast to Bodrum to take part in watersports or indulge in a time out on Turgutreis or Gumbet beach. Or head to the southwest section of Turkey's Mediterranean coast to glamorous Antalya where you'll find stunning sandy beaches waiting for you.

General Advice on Hiring a Car

When you purchase car hire you are entering into a contract with your car hire company. Always check their terms and conditions before you buy to make sure you're aware of your responsibilities when you collect your car in Turkey, and any additional charges.

Here's a few things to watch out for:

  • Almost all car hire companies add a mandatory fee for drivers under the age of 25.
  • Check what level of insurance is included for the hire car in Turkey. In particular check how much the excess is (the amount you need to pay in the event of any accident) you may want to take out additional insurance.
  • Check what the fuel policy is with your car. Don't forget to fill up the tank before you drop it off if you've agreed to return it full!
  • Find out if there's a maximum daily mileage - especially if you're planning to do a lot of driving in Turkey!
  • You'll need to pay a deposit (or pre-approve one) to pick up the car. Most car rental companies will only accept credit cards for this.
