Samos is one of the eastern-most Aegean Islands and a popular summer holiday destination. Perfect for European sun-seekers who flock to the island resorts, Samos also retains pockets of traditional life for those seeking the 'real' Greece. The verdant green mountains are home to a scattering of traditional villages and undeveloped beaches can be reached down winding dirt roads. The signature of classical Greece is also imprinted on the island, which was the legendary birthplace of the goddess Hera, and home to the renowned mathematician Pythagoras. The ruins of the ancient sanctuary of Ireon can be explored and scores of unearthed treasures can be viewed at the Archaeological Museum. Meanwhile if all you want to do is soak up the sun, sea and sand, this can be found in abundance as well.
Seasonal flights depart to Samos from London Gatwick with Thompson Airways and Small Planet Airlines. For cheap flights to Samos from other UK airports passengers can fly to Athens then take a connecting flight. The airport is five kilometres away from the town of Pythagorio on the south coast. Shuttles run to all the main resorts or cars can be hired at the airport. Flights to Samos tend to involve a stopover in Athens, so why not explore Greece's classical capital before your trip to the island?
There is equal opportunity for exploration and relaxation on Samos. Beaches to suit all tastes line the coast from the pristine white sands of Avlakia and family-friendly Psili Ammos to the wild beauty of Mikro Seitani. Classical history can then be explored on trips to the island's two excellent archaeological museums and its collection of ancient ruins. Ireon is the site of an ancient sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Hera, and whilst mostly ruined it has several preserved features that make the visit worthwhile. Churches, monasteries and the Evpalinos Tunnel are amongst other historical treasures on the island.
TSamos is busiest over the summer season when the resorts become popular holiday destinations for European families. May and September are quieter and the weather is still perfect for relaxing at the beach.
