Whilst Verona's time as a seat of power in Italy faded 700 years ago, it retains the majesty and significance of this time through its beautiful buildings. Made famous by Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, the city's hotels are still popular with those after romance and relaxation.
Smaller than Rome or Florence but with the same stunning vistas, relaxed café culture and plenty of historical spots to visit and places to go, taking a flight to Verona is a great way for an unusual escape in Italy.
It takes around two hours for a Verona flight from the UK to arrive, with flights from northern airports taking a little longer. Verona-Villafranca Airport is just three miles from the city's edge and plenty of cheap flights to Verona land here. There is a local bus that runs between the airport and the railway station in Verona, which is a simple and cheap way of getting on with your holiday. Alternatives include taxis and hiring your own car.
There are buses aplenty to use within the city itself but the best way to get around is on foot as the city is pretty compact, so most things will be within walking distance. If you need to get somewhere pronto you can also jump in a taxi. If you're planning on heading out of the city, for example to see the nearby Italian Lakes then you should consider cheap Verona car hire for collection at the airport. You will get a much better rate by booking in advance.
If you're planning on hitting all the major sights in Verona after your flight then you should consider a Verona Card, getting you free entry to many of the top attractions including museums, churches and monuments. You can buy a one-day pass or a three-day pass.
The top attraction is probably Juliet's House, where you can see the famous balcony, as well as touch the bronze breast of the Juliet statue for luck - you'll know where to touch as it's the shiny bit! Other attractions include the Roman Amphitheatre, Castle Scaligeri, Lamberti Tower and the Piazza delle Erbe. A short walk from the city centre is the Basilica of St Zeno which is filled with perfectly preserved religious imagery.
