Holidays change when you bring children along. There may be more bags to pack, a longer check list to tick and a few more flights to book, but going to a place as a family takes on a magic of its own.

Watching kids of all ages discover areas of the world makes it feel as though you're on your first trip too, even if you've been many times before. Imagine spotting Gaudi's colourful crazy buildings in Barcelona, watching their eyes light up when they first see the Statue of Liberty in New York or riding together to the top of Paris's Eiffel Tower (though you'll probably have to take them to Disneyland Paris after).

While you don't get to travel out of school holidays, there are plenty of ways to save those pennies along the way. Package deals are often the way to go and, if you can manage it, so are last minute getaways. Booking out a villa in places like Orlando will often help you scrimp on expensive outings to restaurants (as you have your own kitchen) and simultaneously makes you feel more at home, as they provide a lot more space than a hotel room.

European Family City Breaks

Cheap family city breaks almost go hand-in-hand with European destinations. The flights are short, cheap and plentiful - and if you pick right, the culture appeals to all ages.

Family weekend breaks in Spain are always a good thing to have on the cards. Places like Barcelona are right next to the beach but are chocked full of sights to see. From the Gaudi art lining seemingly every street to the many museums, history is imprinted onto Barcelona's very identity. There?s also plenty of parks and a zoo to keep the little ones happy.

Rome is another good option if your family is into history as is Edinburgh, an even closer destination for those with impatient kids in tow.

Berlin is another great destination for family city breaks. Teenagers will love places like the Badeschiff, a harboured barge which has a swimming pool that floats in the Spree river, as well as the Berlin Wall and the many cafes to choose from. If you've got younger children, head to Kollwitzplatz park, a favourite with families, and the MACHmit! Museum, an interactive kids' museum.

USA City Breaks

Don't forego going the extra mile - North America has a lot of viable options for family getaways. New York is a veritable playground for avid sightseers. Kids of all ages will delight in seeing all of its iconic sights - the Empire State Building, the Rockefeller Center, Central Park and the many museums, from the American Museum of Natural History to the Children's Museum of Manhattan.

For a glimpse into this varied country's beginnings, take a historical tour around its capital, Washington, D.C.. Rent bikes as a family and see all the historical sites on the National Mall on a self-guided tour - a whole free day of activities! Definitely save time to check out the National Air and Space Museum and go up the Washington Monument, the city's tallest structure.

Somewhere Different

There are some places that you haven't necessarily thought of as the destination of your next cheap family city breaks. Denmark's Copenhagen should be placed top of the list. Think boat tours of the city, canals and harbour, fairytale-like palaces and real-life treasure hunts in Rosenborg Castle. There's also Tivoli's famous city amusement park which is chocked full of concerts, performances, rides, restaurants and exhibitions. And let's not forget the many child-friendly city museums, parks and the zoo!

The bustling souks of Marrakech should also tempt you off on family city breaks. With plenty of century-old markets to explore, stunning gardens and the Atlas Mountains nearby, this sunny city in Morocco has more appeal than you might think, no matter what age you are.
