New York has always been a hugely popular destination for city breaks, and now with the increasing availability of cheap flights to NYC, it is more popular than ever! The city that never sleeps has countless iconic landmarks around every corner and every street feels like a film-set (and often is). It overwhelms every sense; the smell of hotdog and pretzel stands mingle with the wail of sirens and traffic. It is hectic, fast-paced and forever setting trends, a massive hodgepodge of cultures that comes across in its excellent culinary and arts scene.

This top city break destination for 2016 and 2017 has so much on offer - no weekend break or holiday to the Big Apple is ever the same and there is always something new to stumble across.

When to go to New York

There's not a bad time to visit New York for a weekend break. Visit in winter and be greeted by streets blanketed in snow, with dazzling Christmas decorations and whimsical department store window displays. You can warm up with "a cup of joe" in a typical NYC diner or go ice-skating at the Rockefeller Centre. With Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year events taking place over the winter months, be sure to keep an eye out for New York hotel deals and book early!

In the summer months, temperatures soar, with August being swelteringly humid. However, it is among the cheapest times to visit and it is one of the easiest times to find a great New York hotel deal. There are also always plenty of free outdoor events on to take the edge off the heat. By night visit one of Manhattan's rooftop bars (or book a hotel that has one!) to enjoy the warm summer evenings and views of the city. Spring and autumn's mild temperatures make them the best time to visit. New Yorkers rate "fall" as their favourite time of year in the city.

Where to stay in New York

It can be tricky to get a bargain hotel in Manhattan, although booking far in advance could save you some pennies! For cheap hotels, the Upper West Side has the most variety - check out the quirky budget hotels popping up in the likes of Chelsea and the Meatpacking District. Head away from the tourist bustle and find great bargain accommodation in areas such as Brooklyn. If you want to treat yourself, the Upper East Side is the place to go, where you'll find some of the city's most coveted addresses.
