Croatia is well known for its Adriatic Sea sunshine holidays, but perhaps less known for the fact that the capital, Zagreb, is an excellent place for a city break. This increasingly popular city has graceful architecture, a lively cultural scene and there's plenty of evening entertainment to be had. Visit during the summer months and you'll be able to take a one-hour bus trip to Juran Lake where you can go boating, swim in the clear waters or explore the scenic countryside. All year round, the nightlife beckons with cosy bars and late-night clubs, while in winter skiing at nearby Mt Medvednica, a short bus ride away, in on the agenda.
The charming Old Town, with its picturesque red-tiled roofs, is a good place to find bargain lodgings as well as more upmarket hotels. In the Old Town, you're right in the centre of things and you'll find a great selection of cafes and restaurants on your doorstep.
Outside of the Old Town, but still in the city centre, you'll also find hotels in a range of price brackets as well as hostels offering good deals to independent travellers, and a range of apartments for rent.
For some really good value options, head for the outskirts where you'll find a good selection of budget hotels. Getting into the centre won't be a problem as taxis, including Uber, are abundant and there's also an efficient bus and tram network.
Zagreb has a wide range of accommodation options so you'll need to do some research to find the best deals. An easy way to do this is to search on dealchecker, which is also a good tool to find cheap flights to Zagreb and good deals on car hire.
You'll find some keen deals on Zagreb hotels if you're able to be flexible on your dates, allowing you to pick up last-minute bargains to the city.
You can also find cheaper hotels in Zagreb during the spring and autumn, when the crowds lessen. The sun-filled summer months and snow-dusted winter get pretty busy, so if you do plan to travel then, be sure to book well in advance.
