The Flea tells the story of a young man in Victorian England who is arrested after a suspicious amount of money is found in his locker. It’s a story that encompasses sexuality, scandal and intrigue and it’s a play (that as an audience member) is riotously good fun. Despite it being set in the faraway past, there are parallels aplenty with today’s society, making it feel incredibly relevant in 2023.

Eat At:
Unit 7 Queen’s Yard, London E9 5EN
Crate Brewery, perched on the canal just moment’s from the Yard Theatre, is a firm favourite with beer lovers in East London. They serve their own beers alongside wines and canned cocktails—it’s the sort of unpretentious spot where you’ll never feel judged for your drink choice, and families, couples and groups of friends all come here to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy a tipple. However, it’s definitely not all about the drinks. We’re here to talk about their pizza, which is of the decidedly crisp variety. There are all the classics, sitting alongside more interesting options like a sage and truffle pizza, which comes adorned with thin slithers of potato (a personal favourite), and a Middle Eastern lamb number.

Drink In:
Unit 1, Hamlet Estate, 96 White Post Ln, London E9 5EN
This laid-back Hackney Wick spot comes from the team behind the famed nightclub, The Cause. It’s no surprise then, that there’s a real focus on music here—there’s a record store downstairs and it’s vinyl that’s played upstairs too. When it comes to drinks, you’ll find a short-but-punchy cocktail list, natural wines and craft beer. This is the sort of spot where you’ll arrive in the early evening for a civilised tipple and end up staying until the early hours after the dancing begins.
