Here at dealchecker, we often find ourselves raving about festivals and celebrations around the globe, but this month we’re feeling excited about a whole host of events, many of which are much closer to home. We’ve rounded up some events which are making us incredibly excited about the month of August.
Notting Hill Carnival – London
Britain’s biggest street party has been celebrating Caribbean culture every August bank holiday weekend since 1964. The event features a whole host of imaginative floats parading the Notting Hill area, alongside incredible street food and lots and lots of dancing. After hours, there are a number of parties for those who don’t want the fun to end.
The Sunday is traditionally ‘Children’s Day’ whilst the bank holiday is a more raucous boozy affair, allowing you to decide which you’d prefer.

World Bog Snorkelling Championships – Llanwrtyd Wells
The World Bog Snorkelling Championships is a quirky little event that is gaining attention year on year. This year’s event takes place on the 28th August and is set to watch competitors splash around in a bog, at the fastest speed that they can muster. Anyone can enter so long as they register up to seven days before the event, and bring their own snorkel.
For those who wish to spectate rather than participate, there are drinks stalls, a bouncy castle and bar to enjoy.
Edinburgh Festival Fringe – Edinburgh
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is an annual celebration of the arts which takes place from the 5th – 28th August 2016. It sees the city’s famous venues transformed into performance spaces full of singers, comedians, dancers and lots of happy and amazed bystanders. There are a combination of ticketed and free events so it’s worth researching what you’d like to see in advance.
Alongside the young actors and comedians looking for a meteoric rise to stardom, there are a number of established comedians who come time and time again. This year sees Katy Brand, David O’Doherty and Shappi Khorsandi take to the stage.

La Tomatina – Buñol
The tiny town of Buñol has a population of 9,000 people, and yet it is a destination that has found global fame through its famous La Tomatina celebration. This festival sees 30,000 revellers descend upon these picturesque streets to throw tomatoes at one another. Things can get incredibly messy, and wearing goggles is highly recommended. It’s a celebration which lasts for no more than three hours, and yet the feeling of releasing your inner child will stay with you for months.
Buñol, due to its petite size, does not have much accommodation to offer and as such most participants stay in Valencia and travel by bus to the town for the day.
