Alexander the Great Restaurant
posted by DVC_Chris on 26 August 2009 at 02:10 Athens has some great hole in the wall restaurants, and one of my favorites has a name as grand as its food, Alexander the Great. While a little place it has great food that is made from scratch every day, and is very affordable, making it a great place to stop for lunch while touring the city. Brettos
posted by DVC_Chris on 20 August 2009 at 02:30 There are many amazing restaurants in Athen’s Plaka, but one of the best that I have found is Brettos, which has a large outdoor seating area providing a true European café ambiance. There is a very assertive maitre de who talked us into eating what ended up our best meal in Athens. Adrian Hotel Athens

In classical times, Athens was one of the world's greatest cities so it boasts amazing archaeological attractions - none more so than the Parthenon. Athens is far and away the biggest city in Greece; it's the gateway to other areas of mainland Greece and the Greek Islands and the logical place to organise car hire. Athens is just a few clicks away. Driving tips The Parthenon Under an hour away When you've found a great Athens car hire deal why not grab a cheap flight to Athens ?
Driving through Athens has improved since they hosted the Olympics in 2004. However you'll still find gridlocked roads at peak times and a lot of pollution. While driving in mainland Greece and on the islands is pleasant and easy, Athens is a different story with a lot of aggressive drivers on the roads. If possible stick to the excellent public transport system and save the car for journeys outside the central city.
If the plan is to pick up your hire car and travel out of Athens, make sure you at least visit The Parthenon on the legendary Acropolis, it's a tourist trap, but the museum is considered one of the best in the world and features incredible exhibits from the classical and Byzantine period.
Get out of the city and explore some of these great places that are less than an hour's drive away. You'll find Rafina on the other side of Mount Pendeli and Himitos. It has an island feel with relaxed restaurants offering delicious seafood.
A place worth visiting at sunset is the temple at Sounion, which was the first and last sign of 'civilization' Athenian sailors saw on their journeys. It sits on the tip of the Attika peninsula.
Besides having one of the best beaches within an hour from Athens, Vouliagmeni has an amazing lake where you can relax.
