Acropolis and Museum
posted by pstough It was amazing to be here in this historic place. The museum was so interesting and I loved the Acropolis and of course the Parthenon was the absolute highlight. Historic Triangle
posted by cwentzel The areas of Plaka, Thission and Psyri are the oldest in the city and a walk around here pretty awesome. Keep your eyes open and you'll see so many different things like old mansions and shops. Great to get to know the city like this. Emfietzoglou Gallery
posted by bpfeifer Wonderful private collection of modern greek art, with some lovely pieces and interesting themes. The sculpture was a bit mental but I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. Hadrian's Arch
posted by rcarmichael Wow. This huge marble gate must have been an imposing entrance to the city! Those Romans sure had some style. Agora
posted by qbowman You can feel the historical significance of this place, the meeting and businedd hub of what was the centre of the world. The theatre is amazing and I was surprised to learn that Socrates committed suicide here too. The 200BC Stoa has been lovingly restored and adds to the experience. |
Athens, the cradle of western civilization, is one of the world's oldest and most famous cities which puts it high up on many people's list of must-see places. World renowned as a centre of arts, philosophy and learning, modern day Athens is also the economic, financial and industrial centre of Greece. The metropolis is one of the best known in the world, fusing an advanced modern infrastructure with its splendid classical architecture and highly visible cultural heritage. Like most of the services available here, Athens hotels and Athens car hire are of a world class quality. An indication of the exceedingly warm welcome which awaits tourists on Athens holidays is that whilst locals can't drive in the city centre, tourists with Athens car hire are free to roam wherever they choose. Tracking down cheap car hire in Athens is a great way to save some extra money as well as give yourself some more freedom to choose what you see and when, including some of the more far-flung sights. The easiest way to get going is to take advantage of the car hire at Athens airport, just remember that you'll need to be over 18 and have an EU or International Driver's license, and you need to carry and display relevant documentation when required. The world famous Acropolis should be on the itinerary alongside the Agora of Athens, the Temple of Zeus and Syntagma Square. History buffs can't miss the National Museum of Archaeology, and you can escape to Schinias Beach near Marathon for a day of relaxation.Hiring a car in Athens
