Bordeaux is a stylish city in the heart of the famous Bordeaux wine region. It sits on the banks of the Garonne near the Bay of Biscay. Although for most it's a gateway to the world-class vineyards, it also holds many attractions of its own including stunning 18th-century architecture and a lively social scene. Bordeaux produces over 700 million bottles of wine every year, from everyday varities to some of the most prestigious wines in the world. Most Bordeaux wine is red, but they also produce sweet white wines, dry white, rose and sparkling wines. There are about 9,000 wineries (chateaux) so finding one to visit won't be a problem. Saint-Emilion is one of the best areas to visit, but you'll be able to create your own tailored tour if you've organised car hire. Bordeaux is also a great place to cycle around if you're planning to visit nearby vineyards.
If you head to the west of Bordeaux you'll meet the Atlantic Ocean where there are several picturesque villages. If it's warm enough you can have a swim in Ourtins Lake - the largest freshwater lake in France Another interesting area to visit is the city of Arachon which has beautiful sandy beaches and Europe's largest sand dune! Mondorf les bains is also a good day trip.
