The Botanic Gardens
The Botanic Gardens reflect Christchurch's global reputation as the 'Garden City'. The Gardens boast the finest collection of indigenous and exotic plants in the whole country. Spectacular displays are on offer all year-round and on top of this there are more than 30 hectares of walking tracks, sweeping lawns, conservatories, woodland areas, feature gardens and majestic trees.
Sumner Beach
The idyllic stretch of ocean located at Sumner Beach is renowned throughout the whole country as a great place for surfing and safe swimming. Cave Rock (a volcanic stone through which the sea has eroded to make a cave) dominates the beach. When the tide is low it is possible to walk all the way through the cave and see the rock pools, each one being a very small, self-contained ecosystem.
Canterbury Museum
Located in one of Christchurch's best historic buildings, this Museum is well known for containing some of the finest natural and cultural collections in the whole country and producing imaginative and creative displays for visitors. Canterbury Museum has excellent displays of geology, Maori, European, zoology and Asian collections.
