Located in the deep blue seas a little way from Greece's western coast, Zakynthos has long been a favourite of tourists who want to enjoy sun, sea and sand in the summer months. Towns, villages and dedicated resorts cluster on its southern and eastern edges as the mountainous regions to the north and west are beautiful if less hospitable.
A flight to Zakynthos should take around three and a half hours, although different airlines and different starting airports may increase or decrease this figure within the three to four hour range. Cheap flights to Zakynthos International Airport will give you a great starting point to explore the island. Transfers after Zakynthos flights can take anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour, depending on where your final destination is.
Because this is an island it is sensible to rent a vehicle after Zakynthos flights. There are popular organisations offering car hire from Zakynthos Airport and this will allow you to drive its various appealing roads and visit more than one of the excellent Zakynthos hotels.
From June to September many thousands of tourists flock to the island, but if you want to enjoy it during its most verdant period then book between March and May. This will allow you to take in the vast swathes of greenery which abound after spring rainfall. Various impressive sites, including the Blue Caves and a shipwrecked smuggler's vessel, can be seen.
