There is so much more to New Zealand than Hobbits and countryside, and it's well worth travelling to the other side of the world for. A mixture of vibrant modern cities like Auckland, the lush rolling fields and volcanic wonders of the North Island and ancient culture, there is something for everyone in this paradise down under.
The hottest (and busiest) times on both the North and South Islands of New Zealand tend to be from January to March, and there are plenty of food and wine festivals and summer events throughout this period to enjoy. However, the periods between October and November and April to May will make sure you aren't vying with holidaying locals for space on beaches and in restaurants, so despite being cooler, often make for a nicer time to take a holiday in New Zealand. It's worth bearing in mind that New Zealand has a maritime climate, so the weather is incredibly changeable all year round and you should pack for most weathers, no matter what time of year you go!
Due to the length of the journey, by far the greatest expense during your trip will be the flight to New Zealand, which can be as much as $1,000 one-way. But, if you make sure to book flights well in advance, and avoid the peak Christmas period, then you can save several hundred pounds for the important stuff. If you plan on doing a lot of travelling during your New Zealand holiday, make use of the buses. They're comfortable and reliable, and there are some great deals to be had when you book multiple journeys.
