dealchecker's guide to Crete

Crete is the biggest of the Greek Islands and has one of the richest histories. Home to the fabled Minoans, the island has a history dating back 4000 years and boasts the impressive ruins of the Palace of Knossos, site of the legendary Minotaur and a myriad of ancient ruins of a people said to have sowed the seeds of Western civilisation.

However once you've secured your Crete hotel there is more than ancient history to keep you occupied. The island boasts long stretches of sandy beaches that shelve gently in quiet azure waters, whilst inland is dotted with whitewashed farms and villages tucked around rugged pine covered mountains. It really is a wonderful place to go exploring and there is no better way than to hire a car and get out and about under your own steam. Anywhere you go will turn up an excellent taverna or relaxed pavement cafe with an abundance of local dishes. But if you can't live without your home cooking then all the major resorts have British bars serving your favourite food from home.

If you like to book your travel and accommodation together as a package then take a look at our Crete holidays which will take any hassle out of booking your trip and save you some money too.

When to go
Crete enjoys a warm summer, pleasant spring and autumn and has fairly mild winters. The peak summer months of June, July and August are very busy, and hotels can be expensive. If you can be flexible with your dates the best times to find the best Crete hotel deals are probably spring and autumn after the mad rush of high season. If price is your main concern then the best time to go is definitely winter when you will find it easiest to snap up cheap hotels in Crete but it may get a little chilly on the beach!

The price of flights follows the same pattern but you can still find god deals throughout the year by using dealchecker to search for you and find you some really cheap Crete flights.

Where to go
Before you book your cheap hotel in Crete you’ll need to work out which of the resorts is best suited to the type of holiday you plan. If you're up for a lively holiday then head for the resorts near Malia Beach, which is packed with funky bars and has a great night life. Families should head for the resorts near Rethymnon Beach and Sun Beach where you'll find a great Crete hotel deal with everything you need for a relaxing family holiday. To escape the big resorts head around the rugged coastline where you'll find little beaches tucked away from the world.

Where to stay
Luxury resorts abound and 5-star hotels in Crete include Aldemar Knossus royal Village and the Blue Palace Resort and Spa. Lots of Crete hotels cater to the mid range market and the Casa Leone often gets good reviews. The budget end of the scale is well seen to by establishments like the Lefka apartments and the Renieris Hotel.
