It may be Italy's second largest city, but for contemporary culture Milan is second to none. Home of many of the world's top fashion designers, it's a place to shop, see and be seen. A key factor in choosing a cheap hotel in Milan is location. Whilst the city is reasonably small, the suburbs reach out around the city. This is a good place to find cheap Milan hotels, just check for good low-cost transport links into the centre. Further out cheap Milan hotels are less likely to suffer from noise pollution from the city centre nightlife. Of course if you are visiting for the shopping a central hotel in Milan would be the perfect solution for shopping and dropping. If you are going in a large group, such as a family, renting an apartment style hotel room can often be the best way of having cheap holidays in Milan. Before you go ahead and book your flight to Milan, you need to make a decision on when to visit. If you are on a budget then avoid the traditional tourist season and popular events such as the Fashion Week, usually held twice a year in February or March and September or October. Major AC Milan and FC Internazionale games can also push up prices, so if you are flexible on dates but not on price avoid visiting during major games. If budget is not your concern, then it is still advisable to avoid visiting in August due to heatwaves which drive even locals out of town and will make your sightseeing and shopping rather uncomfortable.
