Egypt

Hot Spots

Red Sea Coast

Named for its red mountains and famous for its coral reefs and amazing diving conditions, the Red Sea has been growing in popularity as a holiday hot spot since the 1950s. But stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters are not all this area of Egypt has to offer. With several parks serving as havens for migrating birds, the area is popular with bird watchers, and nearby Mt. Sinai and the Coloured Canyons make perfect excursions away from the coast.

Mediterranean Coast

The jewel in the crown of Egypt's Mediterranean coast is Alexandria, a bustling sea port where the ancient and the modern meet. You can leave the beach to visit the Bibliotheca Alexandrina or the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa and then soak up the local culture along the harbour. The rest of the coast is dotted with stunning beaches, quaint little fishing villages and archaeological sites. Tourism is becoming more widespread with resorts popping up by the best beaches, and the food is delicious and Mediterranean in style.

Along the Nile

The whole length of the Nile is packed full of the sights that instantly spring to mind when you think of Egypt, as the famous river has always been important in the country's history. From Abu Simbel in the south, through Luxor to the Pyramids at Giza and on to Cairo these attractions define the ancient Egyptian way of life. An excellent way to explore is to sail along it, either in a modern cruise ship, or in the traditional felucca, a primitive sailboat.

Western Desert

The vast expanse of the desert in Egypt boasts huge sandy mountains and miles of sand dunes, broken only by the five oases. These fascinating pockets of culture and agriculture are diverse and offer a unique experience to the adventurous traveller. With influences from Roman to Ottoman to Islam the architecture, food and lifestyles are wonderful, and several of the oases have hot springs which have been used to create relaxing spa experiences.
