A Photographer’s Paradise in Gozo

Post Thumbnail

The little sister of Malta, Gozo, is often seriously underrated. But with gorgeous red sandy beaches and imposing churches, the island’s absence of crowds makes it the perfect spot to take some awe-inspiring photos. It’s not just for avid photographers but also for budding instagrammers looking for that one photo that will shoot them to cyber stardom. So, don’t just stick to Malta, jump aboard the ferry and explore this unspoilt paradise.

Salt Pans

salt pans gozo There have reportedly been salt pans in Gozo since the Roman period, and people still collect and sell the salt from these pans today giving this area of Xwejni some serious historical credentials. What’s more, the grid of the pans makes the land look almost other-worldly, which makes a great framing tool for those gorgeous sunsets.

Blue Hole

Blue Hole Gozo Situated in Dwerja Bay, this 16-metre deep sea pool is an absolute favourite with divers, due in part to the passageway at 15 metres, which takes you out in to the open sea. Divers can expect to see octopi, starfish and even Moray eels. Even if you aren’t sporting a fetching wetsuit (with underwater camera, obviously) the inky blue waters here still make for an absolutely gorgeous photo.

Xewkija Rotunda Church

st john the baptist gozo Xewkija is one of the oldest villages in Gozo, and following World War II it became home to the Xewkija Rotunda Church, which is now the biggest church in Gozo. With its absolutely huge dome at 75 metres tall (the world’s largest free standing dome, don’t you know), the church is certainly an imposing sight. Alongside the remains of the old church, this gives a great view of Gozo beyond the beach. For panoramic shots, take the lift up to the top of the dome where you can enjoy views across the island.

San Blas Beach

San Blas Beach Gozo When it comes to beaches, the more difficult they are to get to the more beautiful they tend to be. San Blas beach is no exception here, being accessible only by foot on a steep, narrow path from the village of in-Nadur. The beach itself is worth the trek, with those famous red sands, crystal clear waters and lush green surroundings.

Calypso’s Cave

Calypso's Cave Gozo This myriad of caves makes for a perfect point of exploration, with some going all the way down to sea level. They also provide a welcome respite from the crowds who flock to enjoy this beauty spot. Where these caves really triumph however, is at the points at which they overlook Ramla Bay, where the darkness of the rock contrasts dramatically with the blue of the sea and the sky.

Daħlet Qorrot

Daħlet Qorrot Gozo This pretty cove sits on the north of Gozo, and is mainly inhabited by local fishermen who use the caves to store their tools. These same caves provide shade for tourists in mid-summer – it’s an area where the local meets the ever increasing tourist trade in harmony. Whilst the temperature is dreamy in the summer months, this beach really comes to life in the winter when it becomes covered in algae making for more dramatic scenes.

The Inland Sea

Inland Sea Gozo This salt water lake which connects to the ocean via a passage in the cliffs has shallow crystal clear waters making it an ideal destination for snorkelling. When the weather is calm you can take a boat through to the sea on the other side, allowing you to experience views of the lake from both the inside and out. However, as you can see the most impressive photos of this unique location are from the cliffs above which allow to enjoy the entire vista.

The Assumption of Our Lady

cathedral of assumption gozo Situated in the centre of Victoria, this cathedral was never completed. Instead, visitors proclaim that a clever piece of artwork inside makes it appear that the dome really was finished. Alongside this impressive piece of trickery, the interior sports many beautiful paintings and a mosaic floor covered in historical iconography.

Ramla Bay

Ramla Bay Gozo Ramla Bay is often claimed to be one of the world’s best beaches and that is no surprise – this gorgeous beach has soft sand, crystal clear waters and is unsullied by the bars and restaurants that adorn many European beaches. However, what makes this spot so photo-worthy is the statue of the Virgin Mary that sits atop the beach, and has done since 1881 when created to commemorate a shipwreck. This statue provides a great contrast to the natural beauty of its surroundings.
