Bizarre Hotel of the Month: Fairytale Belgium

Both quirky and charming, La Balade des Gnomes is a quaint B&B set on an unassuming lane in pretty much the middle of nowhere, Belgium. When this B&B’s owners hit upon a theme they really run with it – as all of the 10 rooms are decked out to the max with decor ranging from The Desert Stars, to the Legend of the Trolls and the Wine Route.

The inspiration behind all the rooms came from fairytales (La Balade des Gnomes translates as The Walk of the Gnomes) and so rooms have a surreal and otherworldly feel.

For true lovers of the bizarre the highlight has to be the Trojan Horse suite, built in the back garden!

The addition of windows and plush furnishings make the suite more hospitable than the original Trojan Horse would have been. But the attention to detail by putting it on wheels is nice – though there’s no mention on the website of whether the horse is mobile.

My personal favourite has to be the Macquarie Island room, where the bed is a boat, floating in a swimming pool, and you have your own little sandy beach!

Other rooms draw inspiration from fairytale woodlands; the woodland cabin has indoor trees, toadstools, woodland animals and a babbling brook.

Even more surreal still you can spend a night on the moon surrounded by lunar rocks and underneath a canopy sky dotted with alien worlds.

Rooms start at €115 per room per night, including breakfast. Though if you can’t afford a trip to see it yourself then a meander through the hotel’s delightfully fairytale-esque website is the next best thing (French and Dutch only)
