How to Spend the Christmas Holidays at Home

Post Thumbnail

We’ve heard it before and we’ll hear it again, this is an unprecedented Christmas – but, we want to make next year as normal as possible. So instead of keeping up with annual traditions, it’s time to undertake them differently, virtually or even start new ones! Here are some ideas from us to you, about how to celebrate the holidays from home!

Winter cocktail making

There’s nothing more festive than a delicious mulled wine, but there are plenty more Christmassy tipples to tickle your fancy. Why not try a boozy hot chocolate and add a little Baileys to your evening winter warmer? Not all festive cocktails have to be hot though, how about a snowball? Just combine 50ml of advocaat with an equal amount of lemonade and add a squeeze of lime juice. Delicious! Here are some more winter warmer recipes from us!

Shop small

We may not be able to visit Christmas markets as normal this year, but there are plenty of ways to get the same experience from home. Instead of buying gizmos and gadgets from retail giants, delve into the world of shopping small and lend a helping hand to independent businesses after a difficult year. Log on to Etsy, Not On The High Street, or even Instagram (it’s a great place to find niche shops) to find a gift. By doing this, you are ticking items off your present list and giving someone a reason to smile because they’ve made a sale. Surely a great way to lift Christmas spirits!

Christmas classes

We know you’ll be missing out on your annual Christmas party this year, but who’s to say you can’t still have your fun? There are plenty of virtual ways to get together to celebrate Christmas and get into the festive mood. Why not try a virtual wreath making class? With this workshop from The Flower Shed, all of the equipment you need is sent to your door along with a link to an online class. You can pause, rewind and start the class at a time that suits you, creating a great opportunity to connect with your friends via Zoom? Don’t fancy arty crafts? Why not try a Christmas gin tasting class? Eden Mill hosts a live event and sends a tasting box of gin and tonic to your door. You won’t even have to get out of your pyjamas!

Evening walks for Christmas lights

No matter how old you are, twinkly lights, tired eyes and dark skies are sure to stir up some nostalgia! So instead of heading to your usual Christmas fair, why not take a walk to the best Christmas lights in your local area? Some twinklers that never fail to put a smile on our face are located in Soho’s Carnaby Street. And this year is no different – the iconic light display has partnered with the charity Choose Love and features neon pink words of positivity such as: ‘future’, ‘hope’, ‘together’ and ‘hero’. We’re sure all these words have featured in everyone’s 2020 vocabulary. Sad you’re missing out? Don’t be! You can take a virtual tour here.

Card games

Card games are a true staple of the festive season, and with Christmas 2020 looking like it’s going to be a quiet affair, we think it’s a tradition that should be brought back in full force. There are plenty of games that can be played with the whole family including cheat, rummy and go fish. Why not try one of these games and snuggle up around the fire with some Micheal Bublé in the background? It’s sure to get your festive juices flowing.
