See:

Pope.L: Hospital (until 11 Feb 2024) and Pagemasters Winter Zine Fair (8-9 December 2023) at South London Gallery, 65 Peckham Rd, London SE5 8UH

Free entry

The South London Gallery is currently showing the American artist Pope.L’s first solo exhibition in the capital. Well-known for his striking public and performance artworks that explore themes of gender and race, this particular show will display reconfigurations of his previous works, one of which involved the artist covered in flour and eating The Wall Street Journal while sitting on a precariously balanced toilet…

This weekend, you can also peruse the Pagemasters Winter Zine Fair in the Clore Studio at the rear of the main gallery. Here, you’ll find an array of intriguing items, from zines and prints to ceramics and jewellery. If you’ve still got some Christmas shopping to do, then you’ll find some seriously unique options here!

Eat:

Toad Bakery, 44 Peckham Road, Camberwell, SE5 8PX
(Closed Sundays and Mondays)

We recommend popping into the nearby Toad Bakery before you visit the gallery, because it’s highly likely that this buzzy spot will have sold out of many of its divine pastries by lunchtime! Some of its festive favourites have just returned to the counter too, including some hefty mince pies and the Yule Hog croissant, which contains pork belly, prunes, red cabbage kraut and melted cheddar and is definitely worth probably having to queue up in the cold.

The Camberwell Arms, 65 Camberwell Church St, London SE5 8TR

If it’s a satisfying, sit down affair that you’re craving this week, then The Camberwell Arms ticks all of the boxes when it comes to wintery outings. The interiors offer all of the snug loveliness of a pub, however the standard of the food is next level. Highlights of the current seasonal menu include crispy Brussels sprouts with pickled red onion, fat and juicy mussels and clams with spicy pork fat, and a showstopping beef and bone marrow pie.

Drink:

Little Cellars, 75 Camberwell Church St, London SE5 8TU

This recently-opened wine bar and shop is the more understated sibling of Peckham Cellars down the road. Inspired by the modern wine bars of Paris, you can sip pours from the carefully curated list of natural and sustainable wines while people-watching the folks of Camberwell as they pass by the window. There’s a snack menu too, which offers cheese and charcuterie platters and small plates including terrines and beignets.

This Saturday, the intimate venue will welcome the team from the Margate-based wine bar and restaurant Sète, who will bring some of their favourite wines to the big city for a corker of an evening…
