It was good enough for the Romans, who used to head over to the south of Portugal to escape the cold of the European winter, and today it’s popular with expats because of the year-round warm temperatures. The coastline here is some of the prettiest on the continent, with towering cliffs and crazy rock formations, with Lagos the perfect spot if you want long and dramatic cliff walks. Faro offers plenty of Old Town attractions, as well as the Ria Formosa Wetland Reserve, and Albuferia and Portimao are also great holiday spots.
