With longer days and the first bank holiday of the year, April feels like a month of possibilities. Here are the celebrations across the globe that have sparked our imaginations this month.

National Cheese Festival – Spain

Trujillo, in south-western Spain, is home to an annual festival that foodies will adore: the National Cheese Festival. The festival, which runs from the 28th April to the 1st May, celebrates its 30th birthday this year, meaning that the festivities are set to be even bigger. There are over 300 types of cheeses to sample, alongside stalls selling wine and beers, so be sure to arrive with your stomach empty.

Byron Bay Bluesfest – Australia

The Australian town of Byron Bay is known for its gorgeous scenery and the gnarly waves which are so loved by surfers. However, this April this compact town becomes home to some of the world’s hottest musicians for the Byron Bay Bluesfest which runs from the 13th – 17th April. This year’s line-up includes artists such as Laura Mvula, Mary J. Blige and Michael Kiwanuka, amongst many others.

The nearest international airport is Brisbane.

On Friday 14th April, London‘s Trafalgar Square will be transformed into a biblical scene. Over 100 Wintershall actors come together (alongside donkeys and horses) to recreate the story of the Passion of Jesus. Whether you’re religious or not, the spectacle is one to behold and thousands of people come to watch each year.

King’s Day – Amsterdam

Here in the UK we think fondly of our Queen, and there are tea parties in honour of her jubilees where vast scones with mounds of clotted cream are consumed. However, our celebrations of the monarchy cannot compare with the revelry of Holland’s King’s Day on the 27th April (King Willem-Alexander’s birthday). Amsterdam is the epicentre of these celebrations and is adorned in orange for the occasion: there are street parties, jumble sales and festivals that continue long into the night.
