Normally, us dealcheckers spend Easter abroad, keen to maximise our holiday allowance with getaways including every bank holiday possible. However, we’re not here to mope. We’re embracing the fact that we have more time and are honing our cooking skills. If we can’t holiday, we are sure as hell gonna be eating well. Here, we bring you some of the recipes that’ll be brightening our bank holiday.
Breakfast – Hot Cross Buns
Why we limit ourselves to enjoying these elevated teacakes just one month a year, we do not know. We’re sure to be eating them throughout the entirety of the Easter period for breakfast, a morning snack and even, a late afternoon bite. Now we have so much time and a slight aversion to the supermarket, we’re going to be making our own. When it comes to baking, there’s no one you can trust more than Mary Berry, which is why we’ve opted for this particular recipe.

Lunch – Roast Lamb
When it comes to Easter, your food life should be much like at Christmas – excessive and hearty. Traditionally, of course, Easter celebrates the end of lent, during which lots of food stuffs are given up to commemorate Jesus fasting in the desert. After 40 days of foodie sacrifice, it’s about time for a treat. We think that if you’ve been fasting, giving up any sort of food, or frankly, just living the lockdown life, you should be able to tuck into something seriously tasty. Lamb is the centrepiece of the traditional Easter meal, representing Jesus’s sacrifice (he was often referred to as the ‘lamb of god’). For a melt-in-the-mouth treat, opt for this Jamie Oliver delight.

Drinks – Simnel Cake Sours
Simnel Cake is the traditional Easter cake – the 12 balls of marzipan represent the 12 apostles. However, we can’t lie – it’s not our favourite cake. Instead, we thought we’d include a nod to it with this spin on the amaretto sour drink, complete with a marzipan ball on top. We think adding cocktails into your Sunday feast serves to make the occasion more decadent. We recommend bringing out the finery for the occasion. Why not bring out your finery for the occasion? We’ve know we’ve certainly become far too acquainted with our slouchy clothes, and it’s about time for a change.

Dessert – Triple Chocolate & Peanut Butter Layer Cake
‘My trousers are already unbuttoned after the lamb’, I hear you cry. Look, since we’re all spending so much time at home, getting involved in Joe Wicks’ PE lessons and doing home workouts has become the norm. This means we’re doing a lot more exercise than we were at our desks. And what does more exercise mean? More calories to consume! So, why not do this in a truly delicious style? This towering chocolate cake is adorned with chocolate eggs and pretzel bark for a real Easter feel.

After all that, you’ll need to retire to bed, and so dinner will absolutely not be needed. But what a delicious day it will have been!
Happy Easter from the dealchecker team!
