10 Ski Resorts With Short Transfer Times

Post Thumbnail

Fed up with three-hour plus ski transfers from the airport to resort? Whether you hate winding up and down those mountain roads in a coach, are a young family desperate to cut down car time, or just want to hit the slopes as quick as you can, this is the list for you. A few caveats: transfer data has been taken from our friends at Igluski.com. Other ski operators may have varying times. Some combine transfers to a number of resorts, some use a private taxi whilst others use a coach, some take into account the awful motorway traffic outside Geneva on a Saturday. What we are basically saying is check with your operator when booking.

1. Seefeld, Austria

Transfer time: 30 mins from Innsbruck

Full of Tyrolean charm, Seefeld is a ski resort suited to families and those learning to ski. It’s also good for those looking for a short trip to and from the airport with Innsbruck being close by.

2. Chamonix, France

Transfer time: 1 hr 15 mins from Geneva

At the end of the A40 autoroute, just by the entrance to the Mont Blanc tunnel is the resort of Chamonix. The piste area is spread out but offers some fantastic skiing in the shadow of the highest mountain in the Alps. Chamonix is a year-round tourist destination so there is a vibrant après-ski scene and a good choice of accommodation for you to choose from.

3. Kranjska Gora, Slovenia

Transfer time: 1 hr 30 mins from Ljubljana.

A great beginners resort in the heart of Slovenia’s Julian Alps, Kranjska Gora has many hotels right on the slopes. Many ski companies offer childcare and family offers here, so keep an eye out for deals throughout the season.

4. St Anton, Austria

Transfer time: 1 hr 15 mins from Innsbruck

Hugely popular with UK skiers due to its vast ski area and excellent skiing, travelling to St Anton from the Innsbruck Airport does not take that long. It is also only 1 hour 30 minutes away from Friedrichshafen in Germany where a number of new charters are flying to from December 2014. Chalet holidays are popular in St Anton so check for late deals throughout the season as owners need to fill every single room every week.

5. Borovets, Bulgaria

Transfer time: 1 hr 30 mins from Sofia

Skiing in Eastern Europe has always had a reputation for good value. Not only are holiday prices low but lift passes and the cost of après-ski can cost less than established resorts in France, Austria or Switzerland. Borovets is one of the best known resorts in Bulgaria and is a great place to ski – and party – without breaking your budget.

6. Morzine, France

Transfer time: 1 hr 30 mins from Geneva

Unlike many purpose-built French ski resorts, Morzine is a bustling town in its own right. This former host to the first ever Winter Olympics is in the heart of the massive Portes Du Soleil ski area which even allows you to ski into Switzerland. Cheaper holidays may be found in the neighbouring resorts of Les Gets or Avoriaz.

7. Ischgl, Austria

Transfer time: 1 hr 30 mins from Innsbruck

A firm favourite with German skiers, Ischgl offers extensive skiing and good quality accommodation. Traditional family owned hotels can be found throughout the resort but if you can’t find the right holiday here then try the neighbouring village of Galtur.

8. Zell Am See, Austria

Transfer time: 1 hr 30 mins from Salzburg

A fantastic lakeside setting, great après-ski, and access to glacier skiing in Kaprun; skiing in Zell am See is a unique experience. Stay in the centre of the town or up the hill close to the lifts. After a day on the slopes head for the Crazy Daisy bar for some lively après-ski!

9. La Clusaz, France

Transfer time: 45 mins from Geneva

Compared to other ski resorts close to Geneva, La Clusaz is not as well known to UK skiers but this can be an advantage as this ski area offers great value for money. Lift passes are reasonably priced and the self-catering apartments within this pretty village are a good option for families looking for a bargain ski break.

10. Mayrhofen, Austria

Transfer time: 1 hr from Innsbruck

One of Austria’s largest ski resorts you’ll find lively après-ski and snow sure skiing on the Hintertux Glacier. Many deals to Mayrhofen focus on the many small pensions and guesthouses dotted around the town so watch out for these if you are looking for a last minute ski break to Austria. The nearby ski resort of Zell Am Ziller has a similar short transfer time from Innsbruck.
