Learn a New Skill
Fuerteventura’s name translates directly to ‘strong wind’ – and for good reason! Some days, the wind gusts at around 40km/h. Its strong breeze has made it a haven for wind and kite surfers, with resort town Jandia hosting the World Windsurfing Championships on its blustery shores every year. While you’re on the island, why not give the pursuits a go for yourself? Numerous wind and kite surfing schools offer courses for beginners. It’s good way to build up your appetite before feasting on some Canarian tapas!
Go Star Gazing
The island has been officially named a ‘starlight reserve’ by UNESCO, an accolade awarded to places that have made efforts to limit the effects of light pollution, thus preserving the quality of the night sky. Companies around the island offer stargazing tours, which come complete with snug blankets, high-tech telescopes, laser pointers and hot drinks.
Island Hop
Fuerteventura lies in close proximity to a range of islands that offer an alternate taste of the region. Mainstays such as Lanzarote and Tenerife are reachable by boat, but if you’re short on time, try Lobos Island. A sheltered escape just a 20-minute ferry ride away, it’s home to natural swimming pools, rich biodiversity, white sands, and rugged hiking trails. Ferries leave from Corralejo regularly throughout the day, but only 200 people are allowed on the island at a time. Try and catch the 10am ferry to the island to ensure your spot!
Try out a Dune Buggy
Petrol heads rejoice! By far some of Fuerteventura’s most defining sights are its dunes, and you can get up close and personal by traversing them in an open-air buggy. Tours tend to be about 80km long, and you’ll see parts of the island that are inaccessible by car. You’ll leave the tour dusty, dirty and thoroughly exhilarated – cap your day off with a salty swim in the sea!
Make a Splash at a Waterpark
When the heat gets too much and you’ve had enough lounging around, what better way to cool off – and get your heart racing – than by heading to a waterpark? Fuerteventura’s Acua Waterpark offers jaw-dropping slides, a wave pool, a lazy river, and much more. It’s the ultimate way to cool off while soaking up that all-important vitamin D! Restaurants on site offer a predictable array of fried food lunch options, but taking your own snacks might make for a more budget-friendly way to dine.
