Treat yourself to a luxury first class return from Edinburgh to London on the sleeper train with your winnings, which will cost you from £402 return, or head under the Channel on the Eurostar. We’ve spotted return tickets to posh Basle in Switzerland from £230 return, meaning you could take someone with you – or just use the money to enjoy yourself when you get there!

If you need a getaway to a far-off beach then your £500 will go far when it comes to sorting out a flight. Looking at flight prices for March we’ve found Gatwick to Cancun from £349, Manchester to Barbados from £346, Birmingham to Goa from £487 and London to the Maldives starts from £459 return. Now, where did my sunglasses get to?

Most cruises bring you back to where you started from, so by that token, you won’t have gone very far at all, but that’s certainly overlooking all the great places you saw along the way! Soak up the Norwegian Fjords from £450 per person, sail the Mediterranean from £450 per person or share your winnings and cruise with someone else on a two-night mini cruise to Western Europe from £199 per person.

By Car

If you’ve got a fairly fuel efficient car, you can get about 5000 miles for £500 which will take you six times between Lands End and John O’Groats. Or if you’re feeling more adventurous, you can get from London to Dubai – although we wouldn’t recommend the route as it goes through Iraq. If you’ve been inspired by the palm trees of Sochi, then you can get there AND back as it’s only 2,300 miles away by road – easy.
